During the first leg of the research, we were concerned with creating software tools to efficiently collect basic information about LiveJournal communities and their members, as well as how membership in communities changes with time.

We then developed a visualization to explore how different LiveJournal communities were related to each other through shared members. These implicit links between communities could be used to understand how different communities relate to each other, how information flows through LiveJournal communities, and to help LiveJournal users reflect on their position in the LiveJournal space as a whole.
